Metal Tower

...They began as tombs for Zen monks and were later adapted to other sects after the Kamakura period.
[Metal tower]
Metal towers are made of bronze or iron, and many of them are pagodas, treasure towers, or five-ring towers, and were built to house relics and place them within a building. The pagoda was originally a sutra stand, which supported a gilt bronze bucket containing a scroll of sutras, with a pagoda placed on top. Remains of this type can be found at Enryaku-ji Temple, Rinno-ji Temple, and other temples.
