...There have also been major earthquakes on the Mediterranean coast of East Africa. The 1960 Agadir earthquake ( M 5.8) is cited as an example of how even a small earthquake can kill more than 10,000 people if conditions are poor. Huge earthquakes of about M 8 occur from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean.
