Bournemouth

Bournemouth
A city in southern England, United Kingdom. It is a unitary authority. In 1974, it was separated from Hampshire County and became part of Dorset County, and in 1997, it became a unitary authority. It is a seaside resort facing the English Channel, facing Poole Bay to the west. The sandy beach stretches for about 10 km, and in the Poole Bay area, sandstone cliffs continue behind. It began when a prominent Dorset man built a summer house here around 1810, and developed rapidly in the second half of the 19th century, especially after the railway was built in 1870. It has also developed as a residential area, and because of its warm climate, it was once a great place for retired civil servants and others who had finished working in overseas colonies to enjoy their retirement. There is St. Peter's Cathedral, where Mary, the wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and her father, the thinker William Godwin, are buried. The area is 46 km2 . Population: 163,600 (2005 estimate).
