A plateau in the northwestern United States. It spreads across the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. It is bounded by the Cascade Range to the west and the Bitterroot Range, a branch of the Rocky Mountains, to the east, and is carved by the Columbia River and the Snake River. It is 500 to 1500 meters above sea level. It is a lava plateau made of basalt from the Tertiary Period of the Cenozoic Era. It has a predominantly steppe landscape.
