Born in Switzerland on March 24, 1867. He came to Japan in 1893 and taught French law at the Imperial University until 1899. He served as a legal advisor to the Ministry of Justice and studied Japanese culture. After returning to Japan, he became a professor at the University of Paris and worked to introduce Japanese literature. He passed away on January 10, 1947, at the age of 79.
