…Visits to Ise Shrine began in the Heian period and were popular throughout the early modern period, and many people flocked to the shrine from all over the country during the several popular Okage-mairi pilgrimages. Uji-go developed in the southeast at the Inner Shrine (Koutai Jingu), Yamada-go's torii-mae-machi in the Outer Shrine (Toyouke Daijingu) 5km northwest, and an entertainment district developed in Furuichi between the two. The shrine was autonomous as a sacred territory, and in the Edo period, the Yamada Magistrate was established. …
