Columbia University in the City of New York

It is a private university in New York City, USA, and is one of the prestigious Ivy League schools in the east. It was founded in 1754 under the name of King's College by a royal charter from King George II of England, and was the fifth university founded in the American colonial period. In 1784, it was renamed Columbia College by state law, but in 1896, it became known as Columbia University with the establishment of professional and graduate schools in law, engineering, and medicine. Columbia College, which still serves as an undergraduate school, is a pioneer in general education, and its liberal arts curriculum in "Modern Civilization Studies" and "Humanities" is particularly well-known. The College of Arts and Sciences, which was established in 1991, coordinates and oversees the curriculum of Columbia College, the graduate school of academics, and the graduate school of international relations and arts, including the School of General Studies for adults aged 21 and over. At the graduate level, it has professional schools and graduate schools of academics such as architecture, law, business administration, journalism, social work, and medicine. Other affiliated faculties include Barnard College, an all-women's college, and Teachers College, a teacher training college. The total number of students is 23,650 (2003), but Columbia College, the core of undergraduate education, has only 4,170 students, the lowest among the Ivy League, making it an urban comprehensive university with an overwhelming proportion of graduate-level students. As of 2003, the number of full-time faculty members is 3,224.
