A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera family, Chloropidae. English names are gout fly and frit fly. They are so named because their larvae burrow into plant stems and feed on the growing points of young stems and young ears. This is a very large family, with over 2,000 species described worldwide, and about 150 species found in Japan. Many species have very different habits, and the feeding habits of the larvae are diverse, including herbivores, scavengers, parasites on spider and grasshopper egg masses, parasites on frogs, and aphid predators.
