Born: September 12, 1902, Minas Gerais Died: August 22, 1976. A Brazilian physician and politician from the Rio de Janeiro area. He entered politics in 1933 and was elected to the federal parliament in 1934. He served as governor of Minas Gerais from 1951 to 1955, and was president from 1956 to 1960. Under the slogan "50 years in 5 years," he promoted industrialization, development of the hinterland, and the construction of a new capital, Brasilia. However, the rapid industrialization policy and the deficit caused by the construction of Brasilia led to inflation, exacerbating economic difficulties, and he was ousted from his position as president in a coup d'état.
