Died: August 22, 1976. A Brazilian physician and politician from the Rio de Janeiro area. He entered politics in 1933 and was elected to the federal parliament in 1934. He served as governor of Minas Gerais from 1951 to 1955, and was president from 1956 to 1960. Under the slogan "50 years in 5 years," he promoted industrialization, development of the hinterland, and the construction of a new capital, Brasilia. However, the rapid industrialization policy and the deficit caused by the construction of Brasilia led to inflation, exacerbating economic difficulties, and he was ousted from his position as president in a coup d'état.

ブラジルの医師，政治家。 1933年政界に入り，34年連邦議会に選出された。 51～55年ミナスジェライス州知事を経て，56～60年大統領をつとめた。「50年を5年で」をスローガンに工業化，奥地開発，新首都ブラジリアの建設を進めた。しかし急激な工業化政策とブラジリア建設などによる赤字財政はインフレを招き，経済困難を深刻化させ，クーデターにより大統領の地位を追われた。
