…The line spanned the former German and Prussian territories, and its main purpose was to combat unemployment and transport the military, but the cost-saving effect on general automobile traffic was also fully considered in the plan. After the division of East and West Germany after World War II, only 2,110 km remained in West Germany, but construction progressed due to the introduction of a road tax on mineral oil in 1963 and the promotion of the autobahn, and after the war the name was changed to Bundes‐Autobahn. The current completed section of both the former East and West German lines is 11,000 km. …
