Komi Republic (English spelling)

Japanese: コミ[共和国]（英語表記）Komi

A republic within the Russian Federation. It was an autonomous republic within the Russian Republic of the Soviet Union, but was declared a republic in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It is located in the northeastern part of European Russia, bordered to the east by the watershed of the Ural Mountains, and to the north is included in the Arctic Circle. It has an area of 415,900 km2 and a population of 1,250,800 (1989). The ethnic makeup is Komi 23.3%, Russian 57.7%, Ukrainian 8.3%, Belarusian and others 10.7% (1989). Most Komi people live in rural areas.
