It is said to have started with the Nakano play that was established in 1652 ( Keian 5 ). Along with the Kado - za Theater, it was the center of Osaka Kabuki during the Edo period. It was renamed in 1872 ( Meiji 5 ). It closed in 1999 ( Heisei 11 ).

[1] 〘名〙① 中央の座席。列座している中央。※源平盛衰記（１４Ｃ前）二一「侍に座を定られけるには、〈略〉中座(ナカザ)の一臈は梶原と定まりける」② 中途で座を立つこと。ちゅうざ。③ 猿楽の一座の中で上座の六位の座に次ぐ地位の座衆。※申楽談儀（1430）付載「一、得分事。〈略〉又、中ざの一臈は、二分。中座の端居は、三ひとつ取らせ給ふべし」④ 朝座(あさざ)と夕座の間の中の休息。午前と午後の勤行の中間の休息。※高野山文書‐寛永一五年（1638）七月一〇日・一二臈庭儀経営注文「一中座之間、他坊へ休息可為停止事」⑤ 江戸時代、新吉原の張見世(はりみせ)で正面中央の席。また、そこにすわる上位の遊女をいう。※洒落本・契情買虎之巻（1778）一「顔と心と風ぞくと、三びゃうし揃ふたるが中座ともなり、立ものともよばる」⑥ 落語家の、前座と真打ちの中間に位するもの。※朝野新聞‐明治一九年（1886）一〇月一四日「叉手一座の組合は、下坐、前坐、中坐、輔坐及び真坐（真うちと云ふもの）より成り立てり」[2] 大阪市中央区道頓堀にあった劇場。慶安五年（一六五二）創始の中の芝居がその始めといわれる。角(かど)の芝居（角座）とならび、江戸時代、大坂歌舞伎の中心であった。明治五年（一八七二）改称。平成一一年（一九九九）閉館。
