Tong Wan Cheng (English spelling)

Japanese: 統万城 - とうまんじょう（英語表記）Tŏng wàn chéng

This was a capital city built by Helian Bobo of the Xia Dynasty in China around 413 (Fengxiang 1). He appointed Chigan Ali as the master craftsman and mobilized 100,000 Hu and Han people to build it, and named it "Tong Wancheng" (Uniting the World and Reigning over All Nations). It was built by steaming earth, and if a drill bit penetrated it more than one inch, the builder was killed and the city was solidified. The remains remain today, buried in quicksand (Jingbian County, Shaanxi Province, north bank of the Wuding River). The inner city measures 608.9m east to west and 527.1m north to south, and is commonly called Baichengzi (White City) because of the whiteness of its earthen walls.

中国，夏の赫連勃勃（かくれんぼつぼつ）が413年(鳳翔1)ころ築いた都城。叱干阿利を将作大匠に任じ，胡･漢の民衆10万人を動員して営んだもので，〈天下を統一し，万邦に君臨する〉という趣旨から〈統万城〉と名づけた。土を蒸して築き，錐で突いて1寸以上入ると，作った者を殺して築き固めたという。その遺構は今日流沙に埋れて残っており(陝西省靖辺県，無定河北岸)，その内城は東西608.9m，南北527.1mあり，土壁の白さから俗に白城子とよばれている。
