…At the time of his death on March 2, 1891, Methodism had achieved astonishing growth, with a total of over 130,000 believers and 541 missionaries. Due to this rapid growth, the movement could no longer remain within the Church of England, so Thomas Coke (1747-1814) was appointed bishop, and Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was ordained, and the movement became an independent denomination. Wesley's thought inherited the tendency of Arminianism, which opposed Calvinism, and he valued free will for faith, the possibility of Christian perfection, and universal salvation. …
