In Central Asia, where Islamic astronomy flourished, in 1258 Hulegu, the founder of the Ilkhanate, built a huge observatory in Marāgha, which is now on the northwestern border of Iran, and appointed Nasir al-Din al-Tusi as its director. Later, in 1428, the great Timurid ruler Ulugh Beg built an observatory in Samarkand, and an observation shaft dug diagonally deep underground remains to this day. …

…Born in Tus, he died in Baghdad. After Hulegu's invasion of Iran, he became his political advisor, and the observatory he built at Hulegu's command remains in Marāgha, Azerbaijan.
