This method utilizes the stable gradient of the soil (angle of repose) and excavates from the ground surface without setting up retaining walls. A slope (slope) is set up around the excavation to stabilize the earth pressure and prevent the ground from collapsing. This method can only be used when there is ample space around the excavation, but it is generally used in conjunction with the well point method for shallow excavations and geology with little groundwater. In addition, to protect the slope from rainfall, it is cured with mortar spraying or sheets.

土壌の安定勾配 (土の息角) を利用して，山止め壁を設けずに地表面から掘削していく工法。掘削周辺に斜面 (法面〈のりめん〉) を設けて土圧を安定させ，地盤の崩壊を防ぐ。掘削部分の周囲に敷地の余裕がある場合でなければ採用できないが，一般には浅い掘削，地下水の少い地質にウェルポイント工法と併用して適用されることが多い。また，法面を降雨などから保護するため，モルタル吹付けやシートなどによる養生 (ようじょう) が行われる。
