An ancient Egyptian city on the east bank of the Nile River, about 40 km north of Luxor. Today, Kift. It prospered as the capital of the fifth nome of Upper Egypt and as the starting point of the Wadi Hammarat road to the Red Sea. It has long been a center of worship of the god Min, and it is said that a temple was there since the 1st Dynasty. It was destroyed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 292. It later became a center of early Christianity until it was conquered by the Arabs in the 7th century, and the Coptic Church was established there. In the Middle Ages, it became an important caravan trade center, and today's Kift is known as a town of ruins.
