A marine fish of the family Tauegajidae (illustration) in the order Perciformes. It is a cold-current fish found in areas north of Choshi and the San'in region, in Hokkaido, and off the coast of Sakhalin. Its body is long and slender, reaching a total length of 80 cm. Its body color is yellowish brown with numerous densely distributed black-brown spots. It has many local names, mainly in northern Japan, such as warazuka, gazi, nagagaji, gatsu, gatsunagi, saizai, and zuna. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms up to 300 m deep. It spawns in May and June, during which time it moves to shallower areas. Like the closely related Tauegaji, the mature ovaries of this species contain a poison called dinognerin.
