A rare animal designated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as being in danger of extinction unless special protection is given. Specifically, it refers to species listed in the Red Data Book compiled and published by the IUCN, which has made the need for protection known to the countries in which they inhabit. This includes the Japanese crested ibis, the Iriomote wildcat, and the albatross. In a broader sense, it refers to all animals related to internationally protected birds and species registered under the Washington Convention. Internationally protected birds are 13 species, including the Japanese crested ibis, albatross and California condor, that were designated as endangered species by BirdLife International (formerly the International Bird Conservation Council, established in 1922) at the 12th Tokyo Conference (1960). However, the number of birds that are endangered has increased significantly since then, and now the designation only has a symbolic meaning. In addition, animals listed in Appendix I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which was adopted in 1973 to regulate international trade in and protect endangered wild fauna and flora, are also internationally protected species.
