Lecturer in English literature at the University of Illinois (1912-13), editorial writer for The Evening Post (13-23) and The Nation (13-18), and professor of American history at Columbia University (31-58). His books include Grover Cleveland: A Study in Courage (32, Pulitzer Prize winner), John D. Rockefeller (40), and Emergence of Lincoln (52).
