Japanese: 天体命名法 - てんたいめいめいほう

How newly discovered celestial bodies are named. There are different naming rules for comets, asteroids, moons, etc. For example, for comets, the provisional designation a, b, c, etc. is added after the year in which the International Astronomical Union was notified of their discovery, and the names of the discoverers (up to three) are added together to form the proper name. Once the orbits are finalized, they are rearranged in the order of their perihelion passage, and the final number is I, II, III, etc., after the year of the perihelion passage.

新たに発見された天体の名前のつけ方。すい星，小惑星，衛星などそれぞれで命名法が定められている。たとえば，すい星の場合は，国際天文学連合に発見の通知が届いた順にその年の年号の後にa，b，c，……とつけて仮符号とし，発見者の名前（３名まで）を連記して固有名とする。軌道が確定すると，近日点通過の順に並べかえ，近日点通過の年号の後にI，II，III，……と続けて確定番号とする。
