The island is located in the western Pacific Ocean, at the southern end of the Mariana Islands, and is the largest of the islands. There is a US military base, and many military and government personnel live there. It is also a stopover point for trans-Pacific air routes. It produces copra, sugar cane, tapioca, etc. The indigenous people are Chamorros. When Magellan arrived in 1521, it became a Spanish territory, but as a result of the Spanish-American War, it became a US territory in 1898. From 1941, it was occupied by Japan for three years. Since the 1960s, resort development has progressed, and it attracts many tourists from Japan. The capital is Agana. The residents have US citizenship, but do not have the right to vote in the US mainland, and in recent years there has been a movement to promote it to an autonomous territory.
