A state in New England, USA. Abbreviated as Conn. or CT. The Connecticut River runs north to south through the center of the state, emptying into Long Island Sound. It has a lot of hilly land. It is primarily agricultural, known for tobacco production, and is also active in dairy farming and poultry farming. It also produces jet engines, helicopters, office equipment, and other industries. It has many higher education institutions, including Yale University, and the standard of living of its residents is among the highest in the nation. The first colonies were established around 1634, and in 1639 it enacted the Fundamental Law, considered to be the world's first written constitution. It became one of the 13 independent states in 1776. Its state song is Yankee Doodle. Its capital is Hartford. It has an area of 12,542 ^km2 . It has a population of 3,596,677 (2014).
