1921‐1993 Yugoslav writer and linguist. Born in Prilep, Macedonia. Studied at the University of Belgrade and the University of Sofia. Served as chairman of the Union of Macedonian and Commonwealth Writers, rector of the University of Skopje, and in 1967 became the first director of the Macedonian Academy. Because Macedonian was still a young literary language, he wrote the first grammar book in 1954 and compiled the first three volumes of a dictionary in 1966. In addition to the concise and powerful collection of poems Earth and Love (1948) and the collection of short stories The Vineyard (1955), which are based on the oral literary tradition, he also produced excellent translations of works by Heine, Shakespeare, and Njegoš.
