[Died] November 26, 1926. Herstaal, Belgium. American firearms designer. Designer of the so-called "Browning rifle." Born into a Mormon family. He had an inventive talent from an early age, and built a gun at the age of 13. In 1879, he patented a single-shot rifle and sold it to Winchester Repeating Arms. His most famous products are the Winchester Model 1886 lever-action rifle, the Remington Model 1905 self-loading shotgun, and the Colt Model 1911 automatic pistol. The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) was the standard rifle of the US Army from 1918 to the 1950s (→ automatic rifle). From around 1920 to the 1980s, the US military used almost exclusively Browning pistols, rifles, machine guns, and machine guns. Even in the 21st century, improved versions of these firearms are still in use in various countries. (→ Colt, Remington)

[Died] June 29, 1861. Florence. English female poet. Gifted with a precocious talent for poetry, she published The Battle of Marathon (1820) at the age of 14.
