An old town in Yuri District, facing the Sea of ​​Japan in southwest Akita Prefecture. The Uetsu Main Line runs through the town. Although the arable land is small, the town produces a lot of rice and vegetables, and also raises livestock. The fishing industry is active in abalone and shrimp farming. The electronics industry has also established itself, centering on low-voltage related companies. In October 2005, the town merged with Nikaho Town and Kisakata Town in Yuri District to become Nikaho City. Area: 18.08 km2 . Population: 5,078 (2003).
