An old town in Yuri District, facing the Sea of Japan in southwest Akita Prefecture. The Uetsu Main Line runs through the town. Although the arable land is small, the town produces a lot of rice and vegetables, and also raises livestock. The fishing industry is active in abalone and shrimp farming. The electronics industry has also established itself, centering on low-voltage related companies. In October 2005, the town merged with Nikaho Town and Kisakata Town in Yuri District to become Nikaho City. Area: 18.08 km2 . Population: 5,078 (2003).
