Adult - Adult

An individual is an individual that, after ontogeny, has grown sufficiently to live an independent life, and whose gonads and internal and external reproductive organs have matured and become capable of reproduction. In vertebrates, the gonads and reproductive organs initially develop slowly as the body grows. When a certain age (puberty) is reached, changes in the hypothalamus of the brain cause the anterior pituitary gland to secrete gonadotropic hormones and other hormones, and as the body grows rapidly, the reproductive organs mature rapidly and the individual becomes an adult. The reproductive organs of many invertebrates develop with molting or metamorphosis, and mature with the final molt or final metamorphosis. It is thought that hormones (neurocrine substances) are involved in these processes, just as in vertebrates.

個体発生後、十分に成長して独立した生活を営み、生殖巣ならびに内外の生殖器官が成熟し生殖可能となった個体をいう。脊椎(せきつい)動物では、初め体の成長とともに生殖巣、生殖器官は緩やかに発達する。ある年齢期（思春期）に達すると、脳の視床下部に生じた変化により脳下垂体前葉で生殖腺(せん)刺激ホルモンなどが分泌され、体の急速な成長とともに生殖諸器官は急速に成熟し成体となる。多くの無脊椎動物の生殖諸器官は、脱皮あるいは変態とともに発達し、最終脱皮あるいは最後の変態とともに成熟する。これらの過程に、脊椎動物と同じくホルモン（神経分泌物質）が関与すると考えられる。
