An emperor in the late Heian period (reigned 1036-45). His name was Atsunaga. He was the third son of Emperor Ichijo. His mother was Jotomon'in Shoshi, the daughter of Fujiwara no Michinaga. At the time, political leadership had been passed on from Michinaga to his son Yorimichi, but the heyday of the regent family had passed. In 1040 (Chōkyū 1), he proposed an order to consolidate manors, the contents of which were inherited by the later Kantoku and Enkyū consolidation orders. When he handed over the throne to his son (Emperor Goreizei) due to illness, he overrode Yorimichi's opposition and appointed Prince Takahito (later Emperor Gosanjo) as the new emperor's younger brother, paving the way for the cloistered government. He died on January 18, 2nd year of the Kantoku era. His tomb is at Enjoji Mausoleum in Kyoto.
