It is the county seat of the same name, located south of Mount Seorak on the east coast of Gangwon Province, South Korea. It lies north of the 38th parallel and was incorporated into South Korea after the Korean War. Its fisheries are large, including squid, pollock, yellowtail, and seaweed. Yangyang Iron Mine is one of the largest in South Korea in terms of both facilities and production volume, and the magnetite ore mined is sent to the Pohang Iron and Steel Works (Pohang Iron and Steel Works).
