Born: July 8, 1885 in Oulu [Died] August 4, 1962, Turku A lyric poet who pioneered modern poetry in Finland. He served as professor of literature and rector at the University of Turku. He was a member of the academician. He was well versed in French, German and Scandinavian literature, and was familiar with Schopenhauer and Kierkegaard. His style of poetry is reminiscent of the highbrow school, as he sang pessimistic tales of human existence, life and death, and other philosophies. After the 1940s, he became inclined towards patriotic conservatism, and there are few works worth reading. His representative works include Sydän ja kuolema (1919) (Heart and Death), Kurkiaura (30) (Flying Cranes), Tuli ja tuhka (36) (Fire and Ashes), and Runoja (06, 24) (Collection of Poems).
