Community psychiatry

Japanese: 地域精神医学 - ちいきせいしんいがく（英語表記）community psychiatry

It is a new field of psychiatry that emerged after World War II and is defined as "the process of satisfying the mental health of a functionally or geographically limited group" (Caplan G.) from the standpoint of preventing the onset of mental disorders. However, only the United States has adopted the above definition, while Western Europe is more specific, and the central task is the theorization and practical activities regarding medical services to treat the mentally ill within the community. Based on the idea that confining the mentally ill in psychiatric hospitals will actually encourage antisocial and non-social tendencies, efforts are being made to establish a home guidance system for early home treatment, and to communicate with administrative agencies such as mental health centers and health centers and hospitals to make efforts in this regard.

精神障害の発生予防の立場から〈機能的ないし地理的に限定された集団の精神健康を満たすプロセス〉(キャプランG.Caplan)とされている新しい精神医学の一分野で，第2次大戦後に台頭した。しかし，上記の定義のような立場をとっているのはアメリカのみで，西欧ではより具体的であって，精神障害者を地域内で治療するための医療サービスに関する理論化と実践活動が中心課題である。精神障害者を精神病院の中に閉じ込めておくことは，かえって反社会的･非社会的傾向を助長するという考えから，早期在宅治療を行うための在宅指導体制を整えること，精神衛生センターや保健所等の行政機関と病院が連絡して，これに努力することなどが図られている。
