A general term for birds belonging to the Climacteridae family of passerines. This family includes one genus and six species of small birds similar to the Treecreeper family. Total length 12-18 cm. The back is gray-brown or blackish brown, with pronounced vertical stripes on the throat and sides. It is found in Australia and New Guinea, living in forests and savannas. It eats insects and spiders, and although it sometimes feeds on the ground, like the Treecreeper, it climbs trunks and branches from the bottom up, searching for food hidden under the bark or on the undersides of leaves. For this reason, it has a thin, slightly downward-curving beak, long legs, and well-developed fingers and claws. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
