… The burning of 'heretical' books (often in conjunction with the burning of their authors) was a common practice throughout Europe from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century. In a papal bull in 1487, Pope Innocent VIII called for the prohibition of the circulation of 'heretical, impious, or libelous' books and the punishment of their authors, listing excommunication, fines, and burning as penalties. But it was Savonarola, the reformer who ruled Florence for only a short time (1494-98), who organized book burning as a fanatical ritual of popular edification. …
