Graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro in 1924, and became a trustee of the school in 1931. In 1939, together with O. Niemeyer and others, he designed the Ministry of Education and Health building in Rio de Janeiro, which is regarded as a representative example of modern architecture in Latin America. In the same year, he also designed the Brazilian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. In 1956, he designed Brazil's new capital, Brasilia. With government buildings arranged in straight lines and residential areas on both wings, this innovative city resembling an airplane was completed five years later.
