Costa, Lucio
Born: February 27, 1902 in Toulon
[Died] June 13, 1998. Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian architect born in France. Graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro in 1924, and became a trustee of the school in 1931. In 1939, together with O. Niemeyer and others, he designed the Ministry of Education and Health building in Rio de Janeiro, which is regarded as a representative example of modern architecture in Latin America. In the same year, he also designed the Brazilian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. In 1956, he designed Brazil's new capital, Brasilia. With government buildings arranged in straight lines and residential areas on both wings, this innovative city resembling an airplane was completed five years later. While designing modern architecture incorporating modernist and functionalist styles, he was also actively involved in the restoration of historical architecture in Brazil.

[Died] January 19, 1910. Imola. Italian socialist. In his youth, he came into contact with M. Bakunin and became an anarchist activist, contributing to the anti-authoritarian stance of the Italian branch of the First International. After participating in several plans for uprisings in the 1870s, he fled to France, where in 1879 he issued an open letter declaring a change in policy from social revolution through uprisings to political activity through the formation of a political party. After returning to Italy, he founded the Socialist Revolutionary Party in his native Romagna in 1881, and in 1982 became Italy's first socialist member of parliament. When the Italian Workers' Party (the precursor to the Socialist Party) was founded in 1992, he joined it, and in 1909, as an elder of the socialist movement, he was elected vice-president of the lower house of parliament.

Died April 28, 1860. Dutch critic and poet. Born to a wealthy Jewish merchant family who emigrated from Portugal. Influenced by Bilderdijk, he studied at Leiden University. In his Dissent Against the Century of the Spirit (1823), he launched a fierce attack on liberalism, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution. His other works include the political poems Vijf en twintig jaren. Een lied in1840 (40) and Wachter, wat is er van den nacht? (48).

Costa, Lorenzo

[Born] 1450. Ferrara
Died March 5, 1535. Mantua. Italian painter of the Balnaissance. Trained in his hometown of Ferrara. He is thought to have been a pupil of C. Tura, and was strongly influenced by his strict style of painting. However, he moved to Bologna in 1485, where he collaborated with the Bolognese painter Francia, and softened his style. In 1506, he became the court painter of the Duke of Mantua, succeeding Mantegna. In his later years, he devoted himself to religious and historical paintings. His works include "Allegories" (Louvre Museum).

フランス生れのブラジルの建築家。 1924年リオデジャネイロの国立美術学校を卒業し,31年同校の理事に就任。 39年に O.ニーマイヤーらとリオデジャネイロの教育保健省庁舎を設計し,中南米における代表的な現代建築と評価される。同年ニューヨーク万国博覧会のブラジル館も手がける。 56年にはブラジルの新首都ブラジリアを設計。官公庁の建物を直線的に配し,その両翼に居住区域を設けるという,飛行機に似た斬新な都市が5年後に完成した。モダニズム様式や機能主義を取入れた現代建築を設計する一方で,ブラジル国内の歴史的建造物を修復する活動にも積極的にかかわった。

イタリアの社会主義者。青年期に M.バクーニンと接触をもってアナーキズムの活動家となり,第1インターナショナルのイタリア支部が反権威主義的立場に立つことに貢献した。 1870年代のいくつかの蜂起計画に参加したあと,フランスに逃れ,79年に公開書簡を発して蜂起による社会革命論から政党を形成しての政治活動への方針転換を宣言した。帰国後の 81年に出身地ロマーニャで社会革命党を結成し,82年にイタリア最初の社会主義議員となった。 92年イタリア勤労者党 (社会党の前身) が創設されるとこれに加わり,1909年社会主義運動の長老として下院副議長に選出された。

オランダの評論家,詩人。ポルトガルから移住したユダヤ系豪商の出身。ビルデルダイクの影響を受け,ライデン大学に学んだ。『精神の世紀に対する異論』 Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw (1823) では自由主義,啓蒙思想,フランス革命に対して激しい攻撃を加えた。ほかに政治詩集『25年間,1840年の歌』 Vijf en twintig jaren. Een lied in1840 (40) ,『番人,夜に何かあったか?』 Wachter,wat is er van den nacht? (48) など。

ルネサンス期のイタリアの画家。生地フェララで修業。 C.トゥーラの弟子であったと考えられ,彼のきびしい造形に強い影響を受けている。しかし 1485年からボローニャに移り,そこでボローニャ派の画家フランチアと共同で仕事をして以来,その画風をやわらげた。 1506年にはマンテーニャの後継者としてマントバ公の宮廷画家となった。晩年は宗教画,歴史画に専念。作品は『寓意画』 (ルーブル美術館) など。
