[Noun] A festival held at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine every year on the middle or lower day of the horse month in March. During the Heian period, in the 5th year of Tenkei ( 942 ) during the reign of Emperor Suzaku, it was held temporarily as a ceremony of reward for putting down the Shohei-Tengyo Rebellion. It eventually became a regular event, and though it was discontinued during the Muromachi period, it was revived during the Edo period. While the Kamo temporary festival is called the Kita Matsuri ( North Festival), this is sometimes called the Minami Matsuri (South Festival). It was abolished in 1870 ( Meiji 3 ).
