Kosala (English spelling)

Japanese: コーサラ（英語表記）Kosala

An ancient Indian kingdom in the eastern part of present-day Uttar Pradesh. It arose in the late Vedic period and initially had its capital in Ayodhya. It is said that Rama, the hero of the epic poem Ramayana, was born here. The capital was later moved to Shravasti in the north. Around the 6th century BCE, Kosala was counted as one of the "Sixteen Great Kingdoms," but it eventually annexed the neighboring Kāśī kingdom (whose capital was Varanasi) to the south, and came to compete with Magadha, a great kingdom to the southeast, for supremacy over the middle reaches of the Ganges River.

現在のウッタル･プラデーシュ州東部にあった古代インドの王国。後期ベーダ時代に興り，はじめアヨーディヤーAyodhyāを都としていた。叙事詩《ラーマーヤナ》の英雄ラーマは，この都で生まれたという。その後，都は北方のシュラーバスティー(舎衛城)に移された。前6世紀ごろコーサラ国は〈十六大国〉の一つに数えられていたが，やがて南隣のカーシーKāśī国(都はワーラーナシー)を併合し，南東方の大国マガダとガンジス川中流域の覇を争うにいたった。
