A large Charadriiformes bird with a relatively long beak (illustration). It is also called the Ororoncho. It breeds in Iceland, the UK, Scandinavia, the coast of northern Spain, the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, Hokkaido, the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, the coast of the Bering Sea, the coast of western North America, and around the Labrador Peninsula, and migrates slightly south in winter. In Japan, it breeds on an island in Hokkaido, and spends the winter in the sea off the Tohoku region. It is about 43.5 cm long, with a long, pointed beak and long neck for a bird in the Auk family. くちばしが比較的長い大型のチドリ目ウミスズメ科の鳥(イラスト)。オロロンチョウとも呼ばれる。アイスランド,イギリス,スカンジナビア半島,スペイン北部沿岸,朝鮮半島北部,北海道,オホーツク海沿岸,ベーリング海沿岸,北アメリカ西部沿岸,ラブラドル半島周辺などで繁殖し,冬はやや南へ移動する。日本では北海道の島で繁殖し,冬は東北地方の海上にいる。全長約43.5cm,ウミスズメ科の鳥としてはくちばしは長めで先がとがり,くびも長い。
