1865‐1931 A representative Finnish nationalist romanticist painter. His real name was Axel Gallén. He was born in Pori. He studied in Helsinki and Paris, and initially painted the lives of ordinary people in a realistic style. In the late 1880s, as the momentum for national independence grew, he turned his attention to the national epic poem, the Kalevala, and thereafter used it as the subject of his representative works, including the frescoes at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. In the 1890s, he came into contact with the Symbolists, and moved towards the flat, decorative style of Synthetism, and his paintings began to take on a mystical quality.
