Born: May 20, 1470, Venice
Died January 18, 1547. A Roman Italian humanist and poet. One of the leading figures in early Renaissance culture. Educated by his father, a high-ranking official in the Republic of Venice, he served the Medici family in Florence and became a cardinal. His major work, Prose della volgar lingua (1525), which advocated that the language used by Petrarch and Boccaccio should be the basis of written language, was the first Italian grammar book. His other works include Rime (30) and Gli Asolani (05), a treatise on love.

イタリアの人文主義者，詩人。初期ルネサンス文化の代表者の一人。ベネチア共和国の高官であった父から教育を受け，フィレンツェのメディチ家に仕え，枢機卿にもなった。ペトラルカ，ボッカチオの用いた言語を文章語の基礎にすることを主張した主著『俗語の散文』 Prose della volgar lingua (1525) は，最初のイタリア語文法書。ほかに『詩篇』 Rime (30) ，恋愛論『アゾラーニ』 Gli Asolani (05) などがある。
