Born: May 20, 1470, Venice Died January 18, 1547. A Roman Italian humanist and poet. One of the leading figures in early Renaissance culture. Educated by his father, a high-ranking official in the Republic of Venice, he served the Medici family in Florence and became a cardinal. His major work, Prose della volgar lingua (1525), which advocated that the language used by Petrarch and Boccaccio should be the basis of written language, was the first Italian grammar book.
