The original purpose of the kesa was to be a monk's robe made from rough scraps of fabric patched together, so to express this spirit in its form, it is made by joining several pieces of fabric together and then sewing several more together. Many kesa have other fabrics at the seams and around the perimeter, the former being called the leaves and the latter the border, and the part surrounded by the border leaves is called the denso or ko. There are also plain ones made entirely from the same fabric, and ones with only gold or vermilion lines at the seams, and these are often used in Zen sects.

　袈裟の本旨は，粗末な端裂（はぎれ）をはぎ合わせた僧衣ということなので，その精神を形に示して，数枚の裂をつないで作った一条をさらに数条ならべて縫った形をとる。そのつなぎ目の部分と四周の部分に別の裂を配したものが多く，前者を葉（よう），後者を縁（えん）と称し，縁葉に囲まれた部分を田相（でんそう）また甲（こう）と称する。なお，全部同じ裂で作った無地のものや，つなぎ目に金色，朱色などの線を配しただけのものもあり，禅系諸宗では多くこれらを用いる。…
