Born 30 November 1761, Selby, Yorkshire [Died] February 22, 1815. Boulogne, France. British chemist. After studying under J. Braque at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Edinburgh, he moved to Cambridge University, where he obtained his medical degree in 1796. He became a professor of chemistry at Cambridge University (1813). He traveled widely, including Sweden and France. He proved that diamonds are pure carbon, and discovered and named the new elements iridium and osmium from the residue produced in the refining process of platinum ore. He was a member of the Royal Society (1785). He was a founding member of the Geological Society of London (99). He was awarded the Copley Medal in 1804.
