At first glance it resembles a raccoon dog, but it has a prominent black band from its cheek to around its eye, and a black ring-shaped stripe on its tail (illustration). It is omnivorous and about the size of a small dog. It is found from southern Canada to central North America. Its body length is 40-60 cm, its tail length 20-40 cm, and it weighs 4.5-10 kg. Its body is covered with long, dense hair, and its dorsal side is gray-black to yellowish-black, while its ventral side is slightly lighter than its dorsal side. Its head is whitish. Its tail has 4-6 black rings on a gray or yellowish-brown background. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
