A former town in Hamana County, in the southwestern tip of Shizuoka Prefecture. The central town, which developed on the southwestern shore of Lake Hamana, was Arai-juku, a key point on the Tokaido road during the Edo period, and is home to the ruins of Arai Barrier (a special historic site). Manufacturing industries such as automobile parts and musical instruments are thriving. The town produces rice and strawberries, and is also involved in fishing and seafood processing. The Tokaido Main Line runs through the town.
