A red alga of the Celastraceae family (illustration) that often grows in colonies in shallow intertidal tide pools. The stem is 1.5-2mm wide and somewhat flat. It branches repeatedly into a fork shape, forming a fan shape 3-8cm high. It grows lying face down on rocks, so its body has a front and back. It is found throughout Japan from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as along the coasts of China and Korea. Because of its beautiful shape, it is sometimes used as a garnish for sashimi, but because it is hard, it is rarely eaten.
