Pratt, John Henry
Born: June 4, 1809, London
[Died] December 28, 1871. Gazipur, India. British geophysicist. Graduated from Cambridge University. Travelled to India as a missionary for the East India Company (1838), and became vice-bishop of Calcutta in 1850. In 1855, he measured gravity at the southern foot of the Himalayas, and found that the deviation of the vertical line based on this was only 40% of the predicted value. He hypothesized that the low-density crust that makes up the mountains had deep roots underground and was in equilibrium at a certain depth (80-120 km) underground, and proposed the concept of isostasy in 1856. Member of the Royal Society of London (66). His main work was The Mathematical Principles of Mechanical Philosophy (36).

A small open space at the junction of a vertical shaft, inclined shaft, etc. and a horizontal tunnel, where cars and materials are loaded and unloaded into cages, and where personnel can ascend and descend, etc. Since most of these are junctions between vertical shaft or inclined shaft transportation and horizontal tunnel transportation, the surrounding area is often a marshalling yard for maneuvering empty and loaded cars arriving and departing.
