...Capital of the Republic of Montenegro (Crna Gora) in southwestern Yugoslavia. Population 118,000 (1991). Located at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, it is at a low altitude (45m) and experiences scorching temperatures of over 40°C in July. South Slavs settled here from around the 7th century, and it was the birthplace of Stefan Nemanja, who founded the Nemanjić dynasty in medieval Serbia.
