A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). Total length is about 38 cm. It breeds in Eurasia and northern North America, and migrates south in winter. A small number breed in Japan, but the majority are winter birds. It migrates to all parts of Japan in large numbers. Males have reddish-brown and green patterns on their heads and gray bodies with fine stripes. There are parallel white lines on the body. Females have a blend of brown and black-brown patterns. The wing speculum of both sexes is metallic green. The male's non-breeding plumage is similar to that of the female. カモ目カモ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約38cm。ユーラシア大陸,北アメリカの北部で繁殖し,冬期は南方へ渡る。日本では少数が繁殖しているが,大部分は冬鳥である。全国に渡来し,数が多い。雄は頭が赤褐色と緑色の模様で,体は灰色に細かい縞模様をもつ。体に平行に白線がある。雌は褐色と黒褐色の模様のじみな色彩である。雌雄とも翼鏡は金属緑色。雄の非繁殖羽は雌に似ている。北アメリカ産のものは別の亜種に属し,アメリカコガモA.c.carolinensisと呼ばれる。
