Honami Koho

An artist of the early Edo period. Son of Kosa, the adopted son of Honami Koetsu. Father of Koden. He went by the name Kuu-sai. While working on the family business of sharpening, cleaning, and appraising swords, he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Koetsu and engaged in a variety of artistic endeavors, including tea ceremony, pottery making, and painting. He produced many Shigaraki-style works, also known as Kuu-shigaraki, using hand-kneaded Raku ware in an internal kiln. His representative works include Raku tea bowls such as "Kangetsu" and "Wabito," Shigaraki-copy tea bowls such as "Fuji" and "Musashino," and a Shigaraki-copy paulownia-patterned water jar. He was related by marriage to Karigane-ya, the family home of Ogata Korin and Kenzan (Fukase), and it is said that he bestowed the Raku ware pottery method manual passed down from Koetsu to Ogata Gonpei (Fukase) (Sawara Mariko, "Umeya Nikki"). The Honami Gyojyo-ki is a three-volume family chronicle of the Honami family that focuses on the life of Koetsu, and the first volume about Koetsu is said to have been written by Koho. He became a Hokyo and was appointed Hokan in 1641. There is also a theory that he was born in 1602.

江戸前期の芸術家。本阿弥光悦の養子光瑳の子。光伝の父。空中斎と号した。家業である刀の磨礪,浄拭,鑑定の三業を行うかたわら,祖父光悦にならって茶の湯,作陶,絵画など多才な芸術活動を行った。作陶では手捏ね内窯の楽焼を行い,空中信楽とも呼ばれる信楽風の作品も多く,楽茶碗には「寒月」「侘人」,信楽写しの茶碗には「不二」「武蔵野」などがあり,また信楽写しの桐文水指などが代表作。尾形光琳・乾山(深省)の生家,雁金屋とは姻戚関係にあり,光悦より伝わった楽焼の陶法伝書を尾形権平(深省)に授けたとの伝えもある(佐原鞠塢『梅屋日記』)。光悦の生涯を中心とする本阿弥家の家記『本阿弥行状記』3巻本の内,光悦について記した上巻は光甫の作とされる。法橋となり,寛永18(1641)年には法眼に叙せられた。生年を慶長7(1602)年とする説もある。
