Neue Sachlichkeit (English: New Objectivity) German

A translation of Neue Sachlichkeit. An avant-garde art movement in Germany since the 1920s. The name comes from the name of an exhibition held at the Mannheim Museum in 1925. In opposition to the irrational art trend of the 1910s, it aimed to restore a sense of reality through a materialistic grasp of objects. Influential painters include Grosz and Otto Dix (1891-1969). Both of these artists, who had been through the Dada movement in Berlin, had a strong desire to participate in society and sharply satirized and criticized the social conditions after World War I from a left-wing perspective. Dix, who painted social injustice, decadence, and vice with a vivid depiction, was nicknamed the "Cranach of the Proletariat." Other artists include Alexander Kanold (1886-1939), who painted nature in geometric compositions, and Georg Schrimpf (1898-1939), who painted still lifes and interiors. The strange effect of this school's paintings, which are close to metaphysical painting and surrealism, is sometimes called magical realism. The movement was destroyed by the Nazi persecution.

New Objectivity in Literature

As a realist movement in reaction against Expressionism, literature was strongly stimulated by the rationality and functionality symbolized by airplanes, automobiles, and the architecture of Le Corbusier and Gropius, but it is not easy to generalize them, as it does not simply affirm them, but at the same time tends to pursue the hidden contradictions in society while following technological progress, and on the other hand tends to emphasize the natural vitality of humans, but it does have in common the emphasis on factuality and concreteness. In addition to E. Piscator's documentary stage, E.E. Kisch's reportage, R. Neumann and L. Feuchtwanger in the field of biographical and historical novels, and E.M. Remarque and L. Lenn in war novels, B. Brecht's dramas, poetry as popular songs, and A. Döblin's experimental novels from this period are also closely related to this trend. Other notable figures in the drama field included F. Bruckner, von Horbert, and C. Zuckmayer, while E. Kästner, H. Fallada, and A. Segers were prominent in the novel field. In poetry, which was performed in cabarets (German-style cabarets), W. Mehring, E. Kästner, and T. Ringelnatz were also prominent.

ノイエ・ザハリヒカイトの訳語。ドイツにおける1920年以降の前衛芸術運動。その名称は1925年マンハイム美術館で催された展覧会名に由来している。1910年代の非合理的な美術の傾向に対立して、即物的な対象把握による実在感の回復を意図する。有力な画家としてグロッスおよびディックスOtto Dix（1891―1969）がいる。ベルリンのダダ運動を経てきたこの2人には社会参与の意欲が強く、第一次世界大戦後の世相を左翼的な立場から痛烈に風刺し批判した。社会の不正、退廃、悪徳を迫真の描写力で描くディックスは「プロレタリアートのクラナハ」の異名をとった。そのほか、自然を幾何学的構成で描くカーノルトAlexander Kanold（1886―1939）、静物および室内を描くシュリンプフGeorg Schrimpf（1898―1939）らがいる。形而上(けいじじょう)絵画やシュルレアリスムに近いこの派の画面の違和効果をさして、魔的リアリズムとよぶこともある。運動はナチスの迫害によって消滅した。

文学における新即物主義

表現主義に対する反動としての現実主義的運動として、文学は、飛行機や自動車、ル・コルビュジエやグロピウスの建築が象徴する合理性、機能性に強い刺激を受けたが、ただそれらを肯定するだけでなく、技術的進歩に即しながら、同時に社会の隠れた矛盾を追究する傾向、一方ではまた人間の自然な生命力を強調する傾向など、簡単には一括できないが、事実性、具体性を重視する点では共通している。E・ピスカートルのドキュメンタリーな舞台、E・E・キッシュのルポルタージュ、伝記的・歴史的小説分野でのR・ノイマン、L・フォイヒトワンガー、戦争小説でのE・M・レマルクやL・レンのほか、この時期のB・ブレヒトのドラマや、流行歌としての詩、A・デーブリンの実験的小説もこの思潮と関連が深い。そのほかドラマではF・ブルックナー、フォン・ホルバート、C・ツックマイヤー、小説ではE・ケストナー、H・ファラダ、A・ゼーガースらがあり、カバレット（ドイツ風キャバレー）などで実演された詩では、W・メーリング、E・ケストナー、T・リンゲルナッツなどの活躍が目だった。
