Wood painting

Japanese:
Wood painting

It is one of the decorative methods of woodcraft, and is also called "mokue." There are three techniques: (1) A method of inlaying concrete patterns, in which the shape of a pattern is carved into the wood and other materials are fitted in. (2) Thin pieces of ivory, horn, wood, bamboo, etc. are glued together to create fine geometric patterns such as arrow feathers, cobblestones, and arrow notches. Pieces of material of a certain size are glued together to create unit patterns or parts of them on the edges, which are then cut to the appropriate thickness for inlay. (3) Thin plates cut into diamond or square shapes are glued to the surface of a vessel to create geometric patterns such as diamond patterns and cobblestones.

Records of wood painting include the "Wooden Painting Folding Screen" in the "Xijing Zaji," which records miscellaneous matters in the Western Han Dynasty, and the "Wooden Painting on a Rosewood Scale" in the "Tang Liuxian." An ancient example is the wooden painting box excavated from the tomb of King Tutankhamun in Egypt. The technique of wood painting was brought to China from Sassanid Persia, and it is believed that the technique developed during the Tang Dynasty was introduced to Japan. There are examples among the Shosoin Treasures and the Horyuji Treasures, and examples of technique (1) include the backs of biwa (Japanese lutes), sugoroku (backgammon) boards, go boards, and boxes for imperial treasures. Examples of technique (2) are often used for boundary line patterns, and examples of technique (3) include thin boards of agarwood, black persimmon, betel nut, and other materials.
